Stuffing

I use polyester fiberfill to stuff my toy pieces. You should break up the stuffing before you start to make sure there are no lumps, then insert small pieces, gradually filling the toy piece and shaping as you go. Stuffing larger pieces like a body and head is quite straightforward, just keep stuffing with small pieces, shaping as you go – try to push the stuffing in and to the sides (equally all the way around) and you gradually fill the piece with a hole at the centre; you can then fill the hole and close up the toy (if it’s a closed piece). It’s easier if you stuff long pieces a little at a time as you go, but only if this doesn’t get in the way of your stitching. You can use your crochet hook handle to push the stuffing down into tight bits.

Pieces should be quite firmly stuffed because stuffing will compact a little when played with, so you want to make sure there’s enough in there to keep the toy’s shape over time. The piece should be stuffed well enough to hold the shape but still be soft and not stretch the stitches.

Stuff with small pieces of stuffing
Put stuffing pieces between the safety eye stems
Push the stuffing in and to the sides (equally all the way around)
Keep checking that the safety eye stems haven’t been pushed to one side, to keep the eye at the front nice and flat against the head
Continue crocheting to close up your piece
Before the final round, fill the centre hole with stuffing
Check you’re happy with the firmness and shape all the way around

Start your final round and close up your piece
