I use a magic ring to start most of the pieces in my patterns – picture instructions for starting a piece using a magic ring are below (you can use the Chain 2 Method instead if you’d rather).
1. To start the magic ring, wrap the yarn around two fingers, creating a loop

2. Insert your hook into the loop, yarn over and pull back through the loop

3. Yarn over and pull through again (Chain 1) – you’re now ready to put your stitches in

4. Make the first stitch in the magic ring, work over the yarn tail as well as the loop – I’ve made a single crochet (UK: double crochet)

5. Continue making the number of stitches requested in the pattern, I’ve made 6 single crochet (UK: double crochet) stitches in the magic ring below

6. Hold on to your stitches and gently pull the tail end to close the hole

You can now continue on to the next round by inserting your hook into stitch 1

If your magic ring loosens a little as you work through the rounds and you have a small hole, turn your work over, pull the tail end tight and sew it around the back of the starting stitches, turn and sew it going the other way too
