There are different ways to make a granny square and you should use the method you are comfortable with. This is the method I use (picture tutorial below):

US TERMINOLOGY
ch4, sl st into the 1st ch to create a loop
Round 1: ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2), (3dc into the loop, ch2) x 3, 2dc, sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch5
Round 2: sl st into the corner space, ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2), 3dc in the same corner space, *ch1, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the next corner space*, repeat * to * 2 more times, ch1, 2dc, sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch5
Round 3: sl st into the corner space, ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2), 3dc in the same corner space, *ch1, 3dc in the next ch space, ch1, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the corner space*, repeat * to * 2 more times, ch1, 3dc in the next ch space, ch1, 2dc in the corner space, sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch5
Fasten off, leaving a tail; sew in the ends.
1. Round 1: begin by making a slip knot on your hook, ch4,

2. sl st into the 1st ch…

3. to create a loop

4. ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2)

5. 3dc into the loop, ch2…

6. repeat box 5 another 2 times

7. 2dc

8. sl st into the the 3rd ch of the starting ch5

9. if you’re changing colour for the next round, fasten off here

10. Round 2: if you’re keeping the same colour, sl st into the corner space (then go to box 14)

11. if you’re attaching a new colour, attach the new colour to your hook with a slip knot…

12. (move to a different corner space than the one you fastened off in) and insert your hook into the corner space

13. yarn over and pull back through, pull through the loop on the hook (continue with box 14)

14. ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2)

15. 3dc into the same corner space

16. ch1, then 3dc, ch2, 3dc in the next corner space…

17. repeat box 16 another 2 times

18. ch1, then 2dc into the corner space

19. sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch5

20. Round 3: sl st into the corner space and ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2)

21. 3dc into the same corner space

22. ch1, 3dc in the next ch space

23. ch1, then 3dc, ch2, 3dc in the corner space – repeat box 22 and box 23 another 2 times

24. ch1, 3dc in the next ch space

25. ch1, 2dc in the corner space

26. sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch5

27. fasten off, leaving a tail

28. turn your granny square over and sew in the ends


For a larger granny square, repeat Round 3 as many times as you want: (3dc, 2ch, 3dc) in the corners then ch1 and (3dc, ch1) until you get to the next corner.
